The reason is that 'sensible people' will find too much material in the book that stretches credulity to the utmost and ultimately give rise to a knee jerk reaction in which Gurdjieff will be dismissed as the charlatan he has long been described as in various quarters. This is unfortunate as there is so much that is valuable and wise in this maverick Armenian's teaching.
